The odds of winning a 17 game jackpot in Kenya, worked out
A 17 game jackpot with three results per match has 317 = 129,140,163 possible result lines. A line picked without any knowledge of the teams wins with a chance of 1 in 129,140,163. Backing favourites raises that only as far as they are truly likely to win, and the size of the pool changes nothing.

How many ways can 17 matches end?
Every match on a 1X2 jackpot has three possible results: 1 for a home win, X for a draw and 2 for an away win. Seventeen matches multiply those three choices together, seventeen times over. The total is 317, or 129,140,163 different result lines.
Only one of those lines matches the final scores. A line chosen blind, by coin toss or random pick, has the same chance as any other: 1 in 129,140,163, or about 0.0000008%. The slip itself is described in how 13, 15 and 17 game jackpot slips work.
Seventeen games sounds only about 30% harder than thirteen, but the gap is far larger. Four extra legs multiply the count by 3 × 3 × 3 × 3, which is 81, so a 17 game slip has 81 times as many lines as a 13 game slip. The method for any number of legs is set out in jackpot combinations and probability explained.
How do 13, 15 and 17 game jackpots compare?
Illustrative example: the table counts every possible line for three slip lengths, with all results treated as equally likely. The last column prices every line at KES 20, the minimum online bet under section 71(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025. The real price of a jackpot line is set in each jackpot's rules.
| Matches on the slip | Possible result lines | Chance of one blind line | As a percentage | Every line at KES 20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13 | 1,594,323 | 1 in 1,594,323 | 0.00006% | KES 31,886,460 |
| 15 | 14,348,907 | 1 in 14,348,907 | 0.000007% | KES 286,978,140 |
| 17 | 129,140,163 | 1 in 129,140,163 | 0.0000008% | KES 2,582,803,260 |
Each pair of extra games multiplies the lines by nine. A 15 game slip has nine times the lines of a 13 game slip, and a 17 game slip has nine times the lines of a 15 game slip.
The cost column shows why buying every line is no way around the odds. At the illustrative price, covering a 17 game slip would cost more than KES 2.5 billion, and the return would still be only what the rules pay for the winning line.
What does backing favourites change?
Real matches are not coin tosses. A strong home side may win far more often than one time in three, and picking it raises the chance on that leg. Across a whole slip the leg chances multiply, so the effect of favourites compounds.
Illustrative example: the next table assumes every one of the 17 favourites has the same true chance of winning, and that the matches are independent of each other. The chance that all 17 win is that leg chance multiplied by itself seventeen times.
| True chance of each favourite | All 17 favourites win | As a percentage |
|---|---|---|
| 33.3% (same as a blind pick) | 1 in 129,140,163 | 0.0000008% |
| 45% | 1 in 785,936 | 0.00013% |
| 50% | 1 in 131,072 | 0.00076% |
| 55% | 1 in 25,932 | 0.0039% |
| 60% | 1 in 5,908 | 0.017% |
A mixed slip is closer to a real round. Illustrative example: with five favourites at 70%, seven matches where the most likely result is 50% and five where it is 40%, the line that backs the most likely result in every match comes in about once in 74,374 rounds.
Three limits apply to every figure in this section.
- A bookmaker's implied probability, 1 divided by the decimal odds, includes the operator's margin, so the implied chances in one market add up to more than 100% and overstate each result.
- The figures hold only if the stated chance is the true one, and nobody knows the true chance before kick-off.
- Where many slips back the same favourites, a shared prize is split among all of them, as explained in how bonuses for 12 or 13 correct are shared.
Why is the size of the pool not the probability?
A jackpot amount describes the prize, not the chance of winning it. Illustrative example: a KES 100 million pool and a KES 10 million pool on the same 17 matches carry exactly the same 129,140,163 lines.
The law ties the amount to money held, not to odds. Regulation 80(1)(c) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 112) requires an operator offering a jackpot to prove it has opened a fixed deposit account holding the full committed jackpot amount. Under section 2 of the Gambling Control Act, 2025, the top prize is defined as payable either from a set prize schedule or from a dedicated pool that builds up from contributions.
The Third Schedule to L.N. 112 classes online prizes above KES 50,000,001 as jackpot prizes, paid within thirty working days after verification, with financial counselling offered to the winner. None of these rules mentions the chance of winning, because that chance comes from the slip and not from the prize.
Advertising law points the same way. Regulation 9 of the Gambling Control (Advertising) Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 114) bars adverts that depict gambling as a source of investment or income, or that use false, misleading or deceptive messages likely to create an erroneous positive impression of gambling. A large prize figure printed beside a slip leaves the 1 in 129,140,163 unchanged.
Can a tipster or an app improve the odds?
No method changes the number of lines. A forecast can at best estimate each match's chances better than a blind pick, and the favourites table shows how far even good estimates fall short of a likely win. The claims made for such tools are examined in what jackpot prediction apps and algorithms do.
A record of past wins does not change the arithmetic either. If thousands of people each send in a line, a few will score well by chance alone, whatever method they used.
How do you work out the odds for your own slip?
For any number of legs and results per leg, the jackpot odds calculator returns the combinations and the 1 in N chance of one blind line. Enter 17 legs with 3 results to see the 129,140,163 figure, then 13 legs to compare.
The figures assume every match is played and settled. Void and postponed matches follow each jackpot's own rules, and regulation 23 of L.N. 112 puts the operator under a duty to show those rules alongside the odds.
These numbers describe chance, not value. They do not say whether a slip is worth its price, and they make no prediction about any match.
Questions people ask
What are the odds of winning a 17 game jackpot?
With three possible results per match, a 17 game jackpot has 129,140,163 possible result lines, and only one of them matches the final scores. A line picked blind therefore wins with a chance of 1 in 129,140,163. Picking favourites raises the chance only as far as those favourites are truly likely to win, and the leg chances multiply across all seventeen matches.
How much harder is a 17 game jackpot than a 13 game jackpot?
A 17 game slip has 81 times as many possible lines as a 13 game slip, because each of the four extra matches multiplies the count by three. The 13 game slip has 1,594,323 lines and the 17 game slip has 129,140,163. A 15 game slip sits between them with 14,348,907 lines, nine times the 13 game figure.
Does a bigger jackpot mean better odds?
No. The chance of a full win depends only on the number of matches and the results possible in each. A larger pool changes the prize, not the 129,140,163 lines on a 17 game slip. Under regulation 80(1)(c) of L.N. 112, a committed jackpot amount must be matched by a fixed deposit account, which is a rule about money held, not about odds.
Can you cover every combination of a 17 game jackpot?
In theory yes, but the numbers rule it out. Illustrative example: at KES 20 a line, the minimum online bet under section 71(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025, covering all 129,140,163 lines would cost KES 2,582,803,260. Real line prices are set in each jackpot's rules, and covering every line still returns only what the rules pay for the winning line and any bonus tiers.
If I back all 17 favourites, what is my chance?
It depends on how likely each favourite really is. Illustrative example: if every one of the 17 favourites had a true 60% chance and the matches were independent, all 17 would win about once in 5,908 rounds. At 50% each the figure falls to once in 131,072, and because bookmaker odds include a margin, the chances they imply overstate the true ones.
