Jackpot bonus for 12 or 13 correct: how near-miss prizes are paid in Kenya
A jackpot bonus is a smaller prize for lines that miss the top prize by one or a few results, such as 12 of 13 correct. The law sets no bonus tiers. Each jackpot's terms, filed with the Gambling Regulatory Authority for approval, decide which scores pay, whether a tier is fixed or shared, and how winners split it.

What is a jackpot bonus for 12 or 13 correct?
A jackpot slip asks for one result on every match of a fixed list, and the top prize goes only to a line with every result right. A bonus is a lower prize tier for lines that come close. Examples are 12 correct on a 13 game slip, or 13 correct on a 15 game slip, where the rules include those tiers.
Legs, slips and settlement are covered in how jackpot bets work on 13, 15 and 17 game slips. This guide looks only at the near-miss tiers: who qualifies, how the money is divided, and why the amount moves from one round to the next.
Neither the Gambling Control Act, 2025 nor the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 112) sets the number of bonus tiers or their amounts. Those come from the terms and conditions of each jackpot. Two jackpots with the same number of games can therefore pay near misses in quite different ways.
What does the law say about jackpot prizes?
Section 2 of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 defines a jackpot as the highest prize resulting from a combination displayed or advertised in a game of chance. It is payable either from a fixed prize schedule or from a special prize pool that grows as contributions are made. The definition names the top prize only, which leaves the lower tiers to the rules of each jackpot.
Regulation 80(1) of L.N. 112 says a licensee that wants to offer a jackpot must seek written authorization from the Authority on Form 2. It must also show a fixed deposit account equal to the jackpot amount it commits to pay, kept apart from its operating account. The jackpot's terms and conditions are attached for the Authority's approval.
Form 2, in the First Schedule, asks the operator to tick a jackpot type: progressive, fixed, promotional or other. It also asks where the money comes from, with player contributions, house funded and promotional budget as the listed options. Those two answers explain much of why one bonus behaves differently from another.
Regulation 80(3) deals with long runs without a winner. A jackpot not won for more than twenty-four months is to be cascaded to lower combinations until it is won. The Regulations do not describe the method, so the operator's rules are where to look for how a cascade reaches the bonus tiers.
Regulation 23 requires a licensee to clearly display the odds, rules and terms for each bet, and bars any change to a bet's terms after it is accepted. Regulation 22(6) adds that terms and conditions may not be amended without the Authority's prior approval. The bonus terms in force when your slip was accepted are the ones that apply to it.
| Provision | What it says | Why it matters for a bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Gambling Control Act, 2025, s.2 | A jackpot is the highest prize, paid from a fixed prize schedule or an accumulating prize pool | Lower tiers are not defined in the Act |
| L.N. 112, r.80(1) | Form 2 authorization, a fixed deposit equal to the committed jackpot amount, terms sent for approval | The bonus tiers sit in approved jackpot terms |
| L.N. 112, r.80(3) | Unwon for more than 24 months: cascaded to lower combinations | Can change what reaches lower tiers |
| L.N. 112, r.22(6) and r.23 | Terms not amended without approval; terms of an accepted bet not altered | The tiers on your slip are fixed once it is accepted |
| L.N. 112, Third Schedule | Online prizes up to KES 500,000 paid immediately after basic identity checks | Sets the payment speed for prizes in that range |
How many lines land on 12 or 13 correct?
Near misses are far more common than full wins, which is why bonus money is spread more widely. On a slip with three results per match, each wrong leg can be wrong in two ways. The count of lines with exactly one miss is therefore the number of legs multiplied by two.
Illustrative example: a 13 game 1X2 slip has 1,594,323 possible lines. Exactly one line has 13 correct, 26 lines have exactly 12 correct and 312 lines have exactly 11 correct.
The table assumes every result is equally likely, which real matches are not. It still shows how many more lines reach each lower score.
| Slip | Score | Legs wrong | Lines with that exact score | Chance for one random line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13 games | 13 of 13 | 0 | 1 | 1 in 1,594,323 |
| 13 games | 12 of 13 | 1 | 26 | 1 in 61,320 |
| 13 games | 11 of 13 | 2 | 312 | 1 in 5,110 |
| 13 games | 10 of 13 | 3 | 2,288 | 1 in 697 |
| 17 games | 17 of 17 | 0 | 1 | 1 in 129,140,163 |
| 17 games | 16 of 17 | 1 | 34 | 1 in 3,798,240 |
| 17 games | 15 of 17 | 2 | 544 | 1 in 237,390 |
| 17 games | 13 of 17 | 4 | 38,080 | 1 in 3,391 |
For other slip sizes, the jackpot odds calculator shows the combinations and the chance of exactly one leg wrong. The figures describe a blind line, so they set a floor for comparison rather than a forecast.
How is a bonus pool split among winners?
A bonus tier is paid in one of two broad ways. A fixed tier pays a set amount to every qualifying line, however many there are. A shared tier puts a sum into a pool and divides it, so each share depends on how many other lines qualified.
Illustrative example, not any operator's figures: a tier pool of KES 1,000,000 is split equally per winning line. If 50 lines score 12 of 13, each line receives KES 20,000. If 500 lines qualify, each line receives KES 2,000, before any tax.
Two details change the divisor, and only the rules settle them. One is whether the split is per line or per slip, which matters when one person holds several qualifying lines. The other is whether a line counts only in its exact score tier or in every tier below it as well.
Why do bonus amounts change from round to round?
Four things move a shared bonus. The first is the money in the pool, which can track the stakes sold where the jackpot is funded by player contributions. The second is the number of qualifying lines.
The third is the jackpot type on Form 2: a fixed schedule pays set amounts, while a progressive pool changes as contributions come in. The fourth is a cascade under regulation 80(3), which can move an unwon top prize down to lower combinations.
The second factor is linked to the results. When a round ends with most matches going the way most slips predicted, many lines reach the bonus score and each share is small. When several surprise results land, fewer lines qualify and each share is larger.
How do you read the bonus rules of a jackpot?
Regulation 22(3) of L.N. 112 requires the terms and conditions of bookmaking, pool betting and totalisator operations to be readily accessible to the public for the duration of play. Regulation 22(2) asks for simple language that states all significant conditions. Before relying on a bonus figure, find these points in the rules.
- Which scores pay, for example 12 of 13 only, or 10, 11 and 12.
- Whether each tier is a fixed amount or a share of a pool.
- How a pool is divided: per winning line, per slip or another method.
- What happens to a postponed or cancelled match, and whether a voided leg changes the score needed.
- Whether a cascade under regulation 80(3) applies to the round.
- When and how the bonus is paid, and which identity checks apply.
Postponements need a careful reading of their own, set out in postponed matches and void legs in a jackpot. How the rules treat a void leg decides how many results count toward each bonus tier.
When must a jackpot bonus be paid?
Section 70(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 requires a licensee to credit a monetary prize won in an online gambling transaction to the player's account within two days. Section 70(6) requires proof of age of majority before a prize is remitted to a registered player.
The Third Schedule to L.N. 112 sets online payment tiers. A prize of up to KES 500,000 is paid automatically and immediately to the registered mobile money wallet or gambling account after basic identity verification. A prize from KES 500,001 to KES 5,000,000 is paid by mobile money or bank transfer within five working days, after ID, ticket ownership and basic anti-money laundering checks.
Regulation 101 adds a cost for paying late. A licensee that has not paid winnings within fourteen days owes the Authority a penalty of 5% of the winnings, and must pay the player interest of 5% per day for the next twenty-one days. Verification and the larger tiers are covered in how jackpot prizes must be paid out under the Act.
What if a bonus payment looks wrong?
Start with the operator's customer care centre, which regulation 9 of L.N. 112 requires every licensee to set up. Under regulation 9(2)(e), a matter unresolved after seventy-two hours, or one the complainant asks in writing to escalate, is referred to the Gambling Regulatory Authority. The regulator's complaints page offers a complaint form that can be delivered to its offices at ACK Garden Annex, 7th floor, Nairobi.
Keep the slip number, the round, the published results and a copy of the rules as they stood when the slip was accepted. Tax on a bonus is a separate question, answered in tax on jackpot winnings in Kenya.
This guide does not list any operator's bonus tiers or amounts, which are set in each jackpot's rules and can change between rounds. It makes no prediction about any match.
Questions people ask
Do you get a bonus for 12 correct on a 13 game jackpot?
Only if that jackpot's rules include a tier for 12 correct. The Gambling Control Act, 2025 defines the jackpot itself as the highest prize, and the near-miss tiers come from each jackpot's terms and conditions, which regulation 80(1)(d) of L.N. 112 requires to be sent to the Authority for approval. Check which scores pay, whether the tier is fixed or shared, and how a void leg affects the count.
Why was my jackpot bonus so small?
A shared bonus tier is divided among every qualifying line. When most matches end the way most slips predicted, many lines reach the bonus score and each share shrinks. The size of the pool also matters where the jackpot is funded from player contributions, while a fixed tier pays the same set amount however many lines qualify.
Is a jackpot bonus pool split per person or per line?
The rules of each jackpot decide this. A split per winning line gives a person with several qualifying lines several shares, while a split per slip does not. Regulation 23 of L.N. 112 requires the rules and terms of each bet to be clearly displayed, and bars changes to the terms once your bet has been accepted, so the method on your slip is the one that applies.
How long does an operator have to pay a jackpot bonus?
Section 70(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 requires a monetary prize from an online gambling transaction to be credited within two days. Under the Third Schedule to L.N. 112, online prizes up to KES 500,000 are paid immediately after basic identity verification. If winnings are still unpaid after fourteen days, regulation 101 imposes a 5% penalty and daily interest payable to the player.
What happens to a jackpot that nobody wins for a long time?
Regulation 80(3) of L.N. 112 says a jackpot not won for more than twenty-four months is to be cascaded to lower combinations until it is won. The Regulations do not spell out the method, so the operator's approved jackpot rules are the place to look for the details. A cascade can change how much money reaches the bonus tiers in that round.
